Day Fourteen
26/05/25 - Day Fourteen
I washed in the Rhine and made the most of a sunny morning to clean and dry some clothes. I got away from camp at 9:30 and had a decent day in the saddle stopping at 53 miles. In the afternoon an old man sat down beside me as I rested in the town of Otterstadt and we chatted for a while. These small interactions really help to break up the monotony and breathe a fresh lease of life into the day.
Renewed, I pressed on and found a hotel to have a beer at. It was officially closed, I was told by the grumpy man there on check in duty, but served me anyway and I filled my water. I found a campsite in a nature reserve by the old Rhine - oxbow lakes cut off from the main river - and cooked and ate. Just before dusk I spotted some creature through the trees, running left to right. I assumed it was a dog, but as I was all tucked up in my bag, I heard some scurrying nearby. My mind went back to a sign I had seen, cautioning about wild boar in the area. I lay alert for a while, before drifting off to sleep. My last thought: deciding to make a big push on to Strasbourg tomorrow, and then rest there a day!
