24/05/25 - Day Twelve
After some breakfast and more nice conversation with Martin and Ellie I set off, but not before I learned Martin and his colleagues were heading to a beer festival further along my route. It was about 30 miles to Bingen and would make a good section of a lower mileage day.
My efforts in the last 10 miles of yesterday were rewarded with a criminally fun downhill leg. 10 minutes of unadulterated winds and bends, my eyes streaming from the wind and me howling with joy. All good things must come to and end though as it flattened out and I rejoined the Rhine.
I stopped at the cute town of Boppard and soaked in the vibe. The rest of the ride to Bingen was lovely and scenic. I rested and stretched on arrival then joined Martin and his friends. We proceeded to try quite of lot of different beers and stayed until 8pm in my merriment. I also wolfed down a portion of currywurst too! It was really nice to have some friends after a while on the road alone, even if it was only for a few hours. We laughed a lot and drank a lot, just what we love.
It had been raining for a while by the time I left and wasn’t showing any signs of easing. I found a camp spot just before dark, then somewhat luckily, it started to rain heavier once I had set camp and began cooking. Safe to stay I got soaked and thoroughly miserable despite being still a bit drunk. I then hurriedly got myself all cosy in my tent, with all my wet kit outside. I will assess the situation in the morning, but for now I can only hope everything isn’t too soggy.
